Les Masies de Voltregà

This destination is in the process of certification.

Les Masies de Voltregà is located in the northwest of the Plana de Vic (Osona), between the meanders of the Ter River. It has a population of 3,140 inhabitants (2017 data) and covers an area of 22.4 km².

The municipality includes several nuclei: La Gleva, Vinyoles, Poble-sec, and El Despujol, where most of the population is concentrated, and other less populated areas such as Borrissola, Can Bondia, Conanglell, El Pou, Gallifa, Quintanes, and Sant Miquel d'Ordeig; as well as the Colònia Lacambra.

Despite being a municipality with widely dispersed nuclei, its medieval base is located at the Voltregà Castle, at the edge of the municipal term, 854 meters above sea level. It is, therefore, a rural municipality that historically featured numerous farmhouses, which gives it its name. However, it wasn’t until the early 19th century that the municipality was formed after being separated from Sant Hipòlit de Voltregà. In fact, Les Masies de Voltregà was known throughout the 19th century as Las Masías de Sant Hipòlit de Voltregà and in 1937, it took the name Glevinyol de Ter.

Les Masies de Voltregà enjoys a rural landscape with the typical oak forest of the Plana de Vic —the fog forest—. Along the banks of the Ter River, the landscape changes, as the riverside forest becomes a habitat protected by heron-like birds, including the great egret, the little egret, and the night heron, among others.

This is one of the richest places in Catalonia for protected bird species and where it is easier to observe them. It is a perfect spot to see different heron species up close, as it is one of the most important nesting areas in Catalonia in terms of the number of nests.

On the other hand, the municipality has a great cultural wealth with magnificent Baroque jewels such as the Sanctuary of La Gleva, or small Romanesque churches like Sant Martí Xic and the church of Vinyoles, with strong literary references thanks to the figure of Jacint Verdaguer.

It is a municipality that takes great care of its natural heritage and has a strong commitment to sustainable tourism, allowing visitors to enjoy all its wealth.
